Liverpool’s ambitions for success have been handed another major lift, as club captain Virgil van Dijk has officially committed his future to the Reds by signing a new two-year contract extension.
Van Dijk signs new deal
The deal, which includes performance-based incentives, could see the Dutch centre-back earn up to £400,000 per week—nearly doubling his base wage from his previous agreement.
Van Dijk’s existing contract was set to expire this summer, sparking speculation about a possible exit. However, the 33-year-old made it clear that staying at Anfield was always his priority.
Following in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah, who recently penned his own extension, Van Dijk emphasized his strong connection to the club, calling Liverpool his home and highlighting his pride in wearing the captain’s armband.
Leader on and off the pitch
Since arriving from Southampton in January 2018 for a then-world record fee for a defender of £75 million, Van Dijk has completely transformed Liverpool’s backline. From scoring on his debut in a Merseyside derby to anchoring a defence that won the Champions League and Premier League, his impact has been monumental. He’s also earned individual honours including the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, and multiple Team of the Season selections.
Despite suffering a major ACL injury in 2020, Van Dijk has returned to form and leadership, becoming a constant presence under both Jürgen Klopp and now Arne Slot. This season, he’s made 44 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and helping Liverpool surge toward what looks to be their second Premier League title. (Transfermarkt)
With the new contract, Van Dijk is now tied to the club until 2027. For Liverpool, retaining their leader at the heart of defence is about more than experience—it sends a strong message of ambition. As the Reds enter a new chapter, Van Dijk continues to be key to their plans for long-term success.
