Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes has reportedly voiced his frustration with manager Eddie Howe following the team’s Premier League opener against Southampton.

Despite being a standout performer during pre-season, Barnes found himself left out of the starting XI, with Howe opting to field Anthony Gordon on the left wing instead.

The Daily Mail reports that Barnes was “very frustrated” by this decision, especially considering his consistent displays throughout the summer. Gordon, on the other hand, had only featured once for Newcastle during pre-season due to his commitments with the England national team, making Barnes’ exclusion all the more surprising.

Barnes’ disappointment is understandable given his strong pre-season form, but it’s also important to acknowledge Gordon’s contributions to the team. Last season, Gordon was one of Newcastle’s top performers, achieving double figures in both goals and assists, a factor that likely influenced Howe’s selection.

Since joining Newcastle last summer on a five-year deal for a fee of around £38 million, Barnes has shown his potential. He made an immediate impact with a goal and an assist in his debut, a 5-1 victory over Aston Villa. However, an injury in September sidelined him until February of this year, limiting his contributions to 5 goals and 3 assists in 21 Premier League appearances.

As the season continues, Barnes will be determined to reclaim his place in the starting lineup and make a significant impact on Newcastle’s campaign. With his skill and determination, he remains a key player for the Magpies as they pursue success in the Premier League.
