Liverpool have been handed a big boost ahead of their Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United.

The Magpies are set to be without their star winger Anthony Gordon for the high-stakes clash, as reported by The Sun.

Gordon’s red card rules him out of final

Gordon’s absence stems from a red card he received during Newcastle’s FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton & Hove Albion. In the 83rd minute, the winger was sent off for violent conduct after pushing Jan Paul van Hecke, an incident that led to his immediate dismissal.

As a result, he has been handed a three-match suspension, ruling him out of not only the final against Liverpool on March 16 but also the Toons’ upcoming Premier League fixtures against West Ham United and Brentford.

Newcastle’s title hopes hurt by suspension

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has expressed his disappointment with the decision, calling it “harsh” and hinting at the possibility of an appeal. However, unless the suspension is overturned, the Magpies will have to navigate the final without one of their influential players.

Gordon has played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s journey to the Carabao Cup final, scoring in both semi-final legs against Arsenal. His attacking flair, pace, and ability to create chances have made him an essential part of the team, and his absence will undoubtedly be a major blow as the club aim to secure their first major trophy in nearly seven decades.

Since making the switch from Everton in January 2023 for a reported £40 million, Gordon has established himself as a key figure in Newcastle’s squad. The 24-year-old has been in impressive form this season, contributing nine goals and six assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. (Transfermarkt)

With Newcastle also pushing for a European spot, his absence in the league could further complicate their campaign.

Liverpool, on the other hand, will look to seize this opportunity and claim their first trophy of the season, especially as they seek redemption following their recent FA Cup exit.
