Kevin De Bruyne’s looming exit from Manchester City, initially seen as a personal decision, has taken a different turn following his recent revelation that the club chose not to extend his contract.
De Bruyne’s surprising revelation
The 33-year-old midfielder, one of City’s most iconic figures in the modern era, disclosed that he never received a renewal offer throughout his final season.
After returning from a hamstring injury and delivering strong performances, De Bruyne had expected at least some form of dialogue around extending his stay.
Instead, the Belgian learned in a short meeting with Director of Football Txiki Begiristain and CEO Ferran Soriano that his time at the club would not be prolonged. Pep Guardiola was reportedly involved in the decision-making process but was not present when the message was delivered.
De Bruyne didn’t hide his disappointment, admitting the lack of communication caught him off guard. Still, he’s chosen to accept the situation with professionalism, even as it brings an end to nearly a decade of brilliance at the Etihad. As quoted by Daily Mail, De Bruyne revealed:
“There was a little bit (of shock).
“I didn’t have any offer from them through the whole year and the club made a decision. Obviously, I was a bit surprised but I have to accept it. Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I’m showing but I understand that clubs have to make decisions.
“I don’t feel awkward. I told them (Begiristain and Soriano) that I feel like I still have a lot to give. I know I’m not 25 anymore, but I still feel like I can do my job.”
End of an era at Etihad
With 107 goals and 177 assists, six Premier League titles, and a Champions League trophy under his belt, De Bruyne has been at the heart of City’s most successful chapter.
Despite the injury setback, De Bruyne has remained impactful this season, registering 5 goals and 8 assists in 34 appearances. While links to Saudi Arabia and MLS persist, he hasn’t dismissed the idea of continuing in the Premier League. (Transfermarkt)
Strategic shift at City
The club’s decision to not offer a new contract hints at a broader strategic overhaul. After missing out on Premier League glory and delivering lacklustre performances all season, City seems to be focusing on building a younger core for the next cycle. Moving on from De Bruyne — the driving force behind their attack — is a bold step in that direction.
