Manchester United’s poor run of form in the Premier League continued over the weekend with a 1-0 loss to Wolves, marking their third defeat in four league matches.

The result sees the Red Devils slump to 14th in the table, a position that’s far below expectations and sparking growing frustration among supporters.

While several players have underperformed, Rasmus Hojlund is attracting particular criticism. The 22-year-old Danish striker, brought in from Atalanta for a hefty fee and seen as a long-term fix for United’s issues up front, has fallen short of expectations this season.

Shearer criticizes Hojlund

Premier League legend Alan Shearer didn’t mince words in his analysis, describing Hojlund as a “damaged player” and suggesting his confidence has completely shattered.

Shearer pointed out the striker’s lack of conviction in the box and poor timing in attacking runs, highlighting his minimal involvement in the recent Wolves loss—just 13 touches and a single blocked shot across 70 minutes. Speaking on BBC MOTD, the pundit remarked:

“I’m looking at a damaged player in Hojlund. I think he wasn’t ready and isn’t ready to lead the line at a club like Manchester United.

“Three Premier League goals, and at the minute I’m seeing a player that doesn’t really want to get in there.

“He’s perhaps a second too early or a second too late, and his timing is all wrong. I think there’s no doubt he’s (suffering from) a crisis in confidence.”

Hojlund’s future at Old Trafford in doubt

Hojlund arrived at Old Trafford with plenty of promise. His first season was a mixed bag but ended on a high, contributing 10 Premier League goals, five in the Champions League, and playing a part in United’s FA Cup triumph. His hot streak early in 2024 even earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award.

But this campaign has exposed major concerns. A lengthy goal drought, inconsistent positioning, and lack of threat inside the box have dented the striker’s reputation.

Hojlund has scored only three league goals in 28 appearances—a disappointing return for a player trusted by manager Ruben Amorim to lead the line. (Transfermarkt)

With United stuck in a difficult transition and under pressure to reset, the club may soon have to make a decision on Hojlund’s future. The coming weeks could determine whether he remains part of the long-term plan or becomes another expensive gamble that didn’t pay off.
